Can You Really Find Success in a Shared Office Space?
Shared offices, otherwise known as coworking spaces, are a fast-growing trend. Entrepreneurs fresh on the scene just can’t get enough of the sharing and caring vibe and, more importantly, the affordable opportunities it offers. In fact, it’s predicted as many as 1.08 million workers in the US alone will be operating this way by 2022.
That’s a big deal and, if you’re struggling to afford a private office, you may be seriously considering the transition. It is worth noting, however, that countless companies struggle to make this approach work for them. Risks of distraction and a lack of branding don’t always appeal, even as these models enter the mainstream. That’s why, before committing, you should ask yourself the following to determine whether success in a shared space would be possible.
What’s Included With the Space?
The perks included with shared office packages are definite highlights. Many come complete with cleaning and landscaping services as standard, as well as stocked break rooms, and sometimes even tech supplies. But, you can’t take these for granted. In some cases, companies must instead agree among themselves who pays for breakroom stock, or even who takes care of cleaning. It isn’t unusual, either, for companies to have to split costs on commercial mowers like those offered by Bradley Mowers for shared landscaping responsibilities. The fewer perks you get, the cheaper your shared space will likely be, but, make sure you know what extras you’ll need to provide so that you can be sure sharing will still save you money.
Who Will You Be Sharing With?
Taking the time to understand companies already operating is also fundamental to success. With close-quarter competition a pressing con of this working setup, you should especially be wary of sharing an office with a company in your industry. By instead seeking spaces with a wide variety of enterprises and specialities, you can reduce competition and perhaps learn a thing or two/make useful connections along the way.
Will the Space Suit Your Team?
As a boss, protecting your employees and their needs should always be a priority, and that’s especially the case when considering shared working. If your team needs silence and focus to complete their tasks, for instance, a private setup is sure to suit much better. If, however, your team works best when collaborating in inspiring spaces, then coworking would perhaps be a better fit. Think, too, about employee perks offered with any package, including on-site parking, access to a gym/break room/etc. Ultimately, you need to be sure this is a space your team will come to appreciate. Otherwise, success here simply won’t be possible.
The amount of startups making this model work right now proves that shared office spaces really can be a help for your business rather than a hindrance. Still, be sure not to jump into this arrangement. Take your time, understand what it entails, and be sure that it’s the right fit before you commit to something that you or your team can’t work with!
