How to Start a Wholesale Clothing Business
The apparel market is projected to hit £67 billion by the year 2026, giving hope to clothing manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers in the industry. Moreover, new entrepreneurs in the wholesale clothing market are motivated to take up the venture. However, there are fundamentals you must settle first before marketing this line of business. Below is a discussion on a few of them.
Get the Required Licenses and Permits
UK law does not make strict legal provisions for wholesale clothing business. However, if you plan to begin selling or trading at a market, the rules differ. Under this arrangement, you will need a market stall license to commence active operations. In addition to that, your wholesale clothing business must conform and comply with the country’s Sale of Goods Act. This means the clothing items you sell to retailers and clients, in general, should be exactly as you described. If you fail to adhere to this (and begin selling), the manufacturer who supplies your wares will be absolved of any breach.
Remember, there are slight variations in stall licenses. This is based on what the local council decides on. For example, two traders will have different permits depending on stall size and location. Meanwhile, while some permits will provide coverage up to a year, others are longer. Once again, the local council will decide that even though you have the liberty to apply for a permanent, temporal, or casual license.
Secure a Physical Location
When you’re done with license and permit applications, the second most important thing is to secure a physical location for your business. For example, if your consignment comes from jean manufacturers, where do you intend to keep them? Even if you want to run an online wholesale clothing business, your clients should be able to reach you at your physical location. The storage facility or warehouse you hire to keep the bulk of your wares will suffice. What you settle for will depend on whether you will be working with additional staff or just by yourself.
Unfortunately, most people fail to find or secure a location in a good area. Business is all about making the most of every situation, including finding and securing a spot that fits your purpose. Moreover, whether you’re renting, leasing, or building your physical store from scratch, be sure you have enough budget for it. Especially if you’re renting or leasing the space, you will require some funds to secure it for a substantial period.
Target Boutique Owners and Prime Retailers
Planning for your target market requires a great deal of skill and persistence. Admittedly, it will not be easy terrain, especially since you just entered the market. Moreover, your existing target market already has its suppliers and may not want to add on for operational reasons.
The question now is, what better value do you have to offer to convince them otherwise? At this point, you need a sturdy mix of advertising and marketing. Would you handle that yourself? Or, do you intend to outsource this part of your business? Whatever you decide to go with must be focused on and around creating competitive value for clients in the long run.
A wholesale clothing business can be viable depending on the structures you put in place. Without a doubt, this space is saturated, but your skill, creativity, and persistence can secure you a place in this crowded market.
